Wrestling, boxing, weight lifting, swimming, football and handball were some sports that were favorites of the Ancient Egyptians that are continued in Egypt today.  Football, especially, has remained a favorite sport and the national team, the Pharaohs, has won the Africa Cup of Nations seven times in 1957 and 1959, and 2006, 2008, and 2010.

Handball is also another popular sport in Egypt.  Having won the African Handball Nationalist Championship five times and coming in second five times, Egypt tried again to win another championship this year.  However, the Pharaoh’s Handball team were eliminated from the championship yesterday, January 21st, by failing to reach the quarter-finalists during their game against Slovenia.

Egypt has also participated in the Summer Olympics since  1912, although Egypt has boycotted the Olympics several times due to political reasons.  Egypt has earned metals in wrestling, weightlifting, fencing, boxing and judo and won a silver medal in fencing and wrestling this past year, at the London Summer Olympics.
